Late
June 1982 : exit - the change / enter - altered life (no
singer)... named after one of our very few own songs...
Iain Jack (guitar) Colin 'hayzer' Hay (lead/rhythm guitar)
Paul Young (bass) Danni Holland (drums) . . . only a few
rehearsals, mostly at the Linton lane boys club... circa
July/August : Grant Jack (keyboard) replaced Hayzer...
Grant was with us from 'damaged goods' til sometime as
'the change', when his twin brother kicked him out of the
band for a ridiculous reason... so he's back in the band,
and there's still no singer... circa Aug 82 : exit :
altered life (#1/ #2) enter : virus ... late 1982 : exit :
virus re-enter : altered life (#2) still no singer ...
Iain, Paul, Grant, Danni ... either end of 82 or start of
1983 : switch : Danni (vocals) enter : James 'chubby' Gray
(drums) . . . altered life (#3) / or first proper line up,

Kirkcaldy, YMCA disco , fri 25 Feb : Kirkcaldy, YMCA
(someone's birthday party)... fri 18 March :
Kirkcaldy, YMCA : plus - moonstone

ARC studios in Cupar... chubby leaves as soon as the demo
is finished, though this only lasts for a day or 2...fri 20 may :
burntisland, orcadia hotel ... end of football season
dance...
wed 25 may :
Kirkcaldy, the Bronx : with the tonsils ... this line-up's
final gig, with chubby being ousted in either late may or
early June... June : enter - Kenny
Donnelly (drums) June : enter/add - Brian
Smith (guitar/backing vocals/occ. synth) ... fri 22 July :
Dunfermline, lynnbank hospital : supporting 'pay

Kirkcaldy, the bronx : autumn 1983 : a
recording of 'halt', using Paul's cutec 4-track
portastudio - at the YMCA, Brian's folks' house at overton
mains, and possibly Paul's folks' house at Beveridge
road... thurs 6 October :
Kirkcaldy, Roma club : a C.B. breakers club meeting...
another daft gig, the only one Iain ever got for us ! ... wed 2 Nov :
Kirkcaldy, YMCA : and this line-up's
final gig, before adding backing singers... fri 9 Dec :
Kirkcaldy, abbotshall hotel :end of 83/start of
1984 Linda Donnelly
records backing vocals on a demo... the demo is
subsequently shelved due to Paul's tape heads having not
been cleaned, causing crazy crackle throughout... it was
even reviewed in the Glenrothes gazette !!... Jan 1984 : enter - Linda
Donnelly & Jackie Paterson (backing vocals) - why I'll
never know, as in it was a big enough band as it was... sun 12 Feb :
Glenrothes, Apollo : fri 16 march :
Kirkcaldy, station hotel : late march : exit
- Iain Jack ... spring : recording
'from the cellar demo'... once finished Linda leaves for
good... sun 22 April :
Dunfermline, lynbank hospital : plus - diamond cut ...
only the 5 guys in altered life played this gig, Jackie
didn't appear on this occasion.
early may 1984 :
enter : Siobhan Langan (backing vocals) ... sun 6 May :
Glenrothes, CISWO club : grand talent competition /
round one ... 3 songs ... why we took part in this
stupid competition is beyond me ... sun 24 June : same
venue - semi-final ... and that would be that ... thurs
5 July : Thornton, Thornton junction ... the final gig
for Brian, Kenny & Paul... I think I was pretty sick
of band as it was, very club band- like - even though
most of the songs were our own... Iain had been kicked
out the band in late march, and I guess I wanted him
back in, aswell as wanting Brian out - a return to
pretty basic, but spirited playing... Brian was abroad
at the time, and so these next changes took place before
he'd returned... late July : re-enter : Iain Jack
(guitar) early August : exit : Kenny Donnelly &
Brian Smith ... enter : Mark 'swanny' Swanson (drums) .
. . early/mid August : exit : Paul Young ... switch :
Danni (vocals/bass) . . . sat 24 Nov : Kirkcaldy,
station hotel : supporting the gimix ... a miners
benefit gig... and then altered life's final gig ... sun
2 Dec 1984 : Kirkcaldy, YMCA : plus - the gimix ...
Danni, Iain, Grant, Mark, Jackie, Siobhan ... exit :
altered life . . . once this gig was done, the name of
the band became 'a new beginning', again named after one
of our songs... I'd still be singing and playing bass at
rehearsals until early January 1985, by which time we'd
have ourselves a fantastic bass player in Kevin Mullen,
with me happily going back to being just the singer...
so that was 'altered life' - through all it's crazy
incarnations... fine ...
